About the invisalign Treatment
Invisalign® involves a series of clear, removable plastic aligners that are virtually invisible and very comfortable. Under the direction of the doctor, patients change their aligners about every 2-3 weeks. The average treatment time for the correction of a moderate orthodontic need is a year to 18 months. However, as with conventional braces, treatment time is dependent upon the patient's individual needs, difficulty of the orthodontic issues and patient compliance. Invisalign® can be used to treat a large number of adults as well as older teens who have a complete adult dentition. Since aligners are removable, patients are able to eat their favorite foods and brush and floss very easily. Optimum patient compliance requires aligners be worn 22 hours each day in order to achieve the desired result within the estimated treatment time.
Getting Started
If you are a candidate for invisalign®, we will follow the diagnostic procedures outlined on the Getting Started page. We will also take a special set of impressions (we call these invisalign®-impressions) that are sent to Align Technology. Along with the impressions, our doctors will develop and send a treatment plan that will describe the type of tooth movements that are needed as well as what the final position of the bite that is expected. Align technicians use CAT scan technology to create a digital copy of the impressions and use proprietary software to create a digitized treatment plan. This plan is called a Clincheck which is a three-dimensional, computerized virtual treatment plan which will show how the teeth will be moved through each stage of treatment. It is then electronically transmitted back to our doctors for review. Drs. Sousa and Ross will then analyze each movement in the Clincheck to verify that the virtual plan is correct. Modifications are made as needed until our doctors are completely satisfied with the computerized plan. At this point, the doctor will accept the case and instructs Align Technology to fabricate all of the aligners.
The entire process from the time the patient accepts treatment, to the time we receive your aligners, ranges from 4-8 weeks.
When Treatment Begins
Once we receive word your aligners have been sent we will schedule your delivery appointment. This appointment is usually about 45 minutes in length. At this appointment we will review your treatment plan and one of our Dental Assistants will instruct you on aligner placement and care as well as address any questions or concerns you might have. We will schedule your next appointment - typically 4-6 weeks - and you'll be on your way to the "smile of your life".
While in treatment with invisalign®, please remember to visit your dentist for an exam and cleaning every 6 months.
When Active Treatment Is Completed
Once treatment is completed retainers will be fabricated to maintain tooth position and stability. The anticipated length of retention varies and will be discussed prior to treatment start.
